DMF Overview
Information, Protection, Access
The Death Master File (DMF) is not maintained by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), but rather by the United States Social Security Administration (SSA).
The Death Master File (DMF) is a database maintained by the SSA that contains information about individuals who have died and had a Social Security Number (SSN). It is also known as the Social Security Death Index (SSDI). The DMF includes records of individuals who were reported to the SSA as deceased and had their deaths verified.
Providing Essential Information...
The DMF contains essential information such as the individual's name, SSN, date of birth, date of death, and last known residence. It is widely used by various entities, including government agencies, financial institutions, credit reporting agencies, genealogists, and researchers, to verify the death of individuals for various purposes. While the DMF was historically available to the public, the access and availability of the DMF have been restricted due to concerns about identity theft and fraud. In 2011, as part of the Bipartisan Budget Act, access to the DMF was limited, and certain criteria and restrictions were imposed on its use. Currently, access to the DMF is primarily restricted to entities that have a permissible purpose under the law, such as federal and state agencies, financial institutions, and entities involved in fraud prevention

Important Note
It's important to note that the DMF is not an official record of death, and it may not include all deaths that have occurred. The information in the DMF is based on reports received by the SSA, and there may be delays or errors in updating the database. Therefore, it is advisable to cross-check information from other reliable sources when verifying an individual's death.
If you require specific information or assistance related to the Death Master File (DMF), it is recommended to contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) or consult with a qualified professional who specializes in accessing and utilizing the DMF data.
